This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Project Summary: A wide range of solvents kill neurons in the developing mammalian CNS. Solvents include DMSO, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol(PEG), methanol and nonanol. After characterizing the specific regions of the brain and the doses needed to produce the damage, concentrations of the agents in brain tissue need to be determined in order in order to help determine the potential significance to human infants. Identification and quantitation will be carried out by GC/EI/MS.
