Hi-Res MRI of Paraspinal Muscles Before and After Posterolateral Fusion of Vertebral Bodies Posterior spinal fusion techniques through a midline approach are effective but result in significant muscle damage from paraspinal muscle stripping and elevated intramuscular pressure from retractors. Recent studies have shown a minimally invasive expanding retractor inserted through a paramedian approach generates significantly less retraction pressure than an open retractor inserted through a midline approach. The purpose of this multi-center study is to quantify paraspinal muscle damage and evaluate clinical outcome of minimally invasive (MIS) versus open posterolateral fusion. and retraction pressure studies.
