This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
We propose to utilize the advanced computing facility to identify novel LTR retrotransposon from verterbrate genomic sequences. LTR retrotranposons is a class of transposible elements in eukaryotic genomes. We recently developed a fast and sensitive algorithm to identify these elements. We want to apply this method to intensively search for novel elements in human and other vertebrate genomes. Our program will be made available to the scientific community on all Teragrid sites, and is currently released as open source. 30000 Service Units are requested. This estimate is based on our existing work using IU Bigred and local clusters. Indiana University is a TeraGrid Resource Partner, and as a result there will be excellent local support available from IU's University Information Technology Services, so we will be able to enhance our application to be compatible with the Common Teragrid Standard Services (CTSS) very effectively.
