CILIARY ORGANIZATION IN PHOTORECEPTOR AND COCHLEAR HAIR CELLS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Photoreceptors of the retina and hair cells of the cochlea are have very specialized structures (which provide adaptations for their specialized sensory roles). A common key element in their organization concerns a cilium. We propose to study the 3-D organization of the photoreceptor and hair cell cilia, especially in relation to Usher syndrome, an inherited deaf-blindness disorder.
