DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The annual National Neurotrauma Society (NNTS) Symposium constitutes the major forum worldwide for exchanging of information in the fields of both traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and in this application, the PIs seek funding support for the 20 best pre- and post-doctoral students to attend the meeting, and $10,000 towards partial support for the travel of 30 invited speakers. In 2011, the NNTS will co-host the meeting with the trauma section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the International Brain Injury Association, and the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. This unprecedented degree of outreach will introduce a truly multidisciplinary dimension to the meeting, which will thus span the spectrum of TBI and SCI from acute post-injury events to rehabilitation and regeneration and repair. The PIs will include a public outreach session, hosted by a local sports legend, and aimed at middle and high school students, who will be encouraged to view the posters, and who will be taught by patient survivors, and by the student grant awardees. Highlights will include sessions on the ethics of clinical SCI trials, blast injury modeling, ageing with TBI, and cumulative/repetitive TBI, in sports and the military. In this way, the PIs will continue to encourage women and minorities into the neurotrauma field, and foster research across the continuum of neurotrauma care.
PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: Over 1.5 million new cases of traumatic brain injury present to emergency rooms in the United States and over 50,000 die each year. Moreover, one in every 120 families in the United States is caring for a disabled neurotrauma survivor. Approximately 12,000 new spinal cord injuries occur each year. Thus, neurotrauma is the largest cause of death and disability, for persons under 45 years of age, in the world. The societal costs of the neurotrauma disabilities exceed $50 billion per year. The National Neurotrauma Society Meeting is the premier worldwide forum for dissemination of research information in this field, and for the 2011 meeting, 3 professional societies will co-host the meeting, such that the spectrum of neurotrauma research presented will span acute care, pathophysiology, regeneration and repair, and ageing with neurotrauma.
