Mindfulness-based Program for Adolescents

Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are at risk for substance use, and there is a dearth of evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs for adolescents with FASD. Therefore, the proposed project will create and evaluate the technical feasibility of an innovative online mindfulness-based substance abuse prevention program for adolescents with FASD. The web-based program will include mindfulness activities (e.g. mindful movements and journeys), as well as interactive decision-making activities and journaling. The main premise is that by training adolescents in mindfulness, these new skills should, in turn, positively influence their executive functioning and behavior regulation, and reduce their intention to use substances. The final product will consist of four web-based courses (i.e. foundations of mindfulness) and in phase I, the first course (Awareness of the Body) will be developed. To establish technical feasibility, adolescents will participate in a focus group and interviews to provide feedback on the program and revisions will follow these evaluation activities.
