Project Summary Accurate, local information about population health and health related behaviors derived from electronic health records may support the development of effective public health programs and policies. Ideally, public health decision-makers would have up to date, comprehensive, representative information about the population they serve. Unfortunately, commonly used data sources for community assessment fall short of this. Recent advances in the adoption of electronic health records make it possible for public health to potentially access more timely and accurate data. However, it remains unclear whether newer sources of data will enable improved assessment of population health. In this project, a multidisciplinary team at Indiana University, the Regenstrief Institute, and the Marion County Public Health Department will use integrated, representative electronic health data to generate estimates of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by diabetes type, age, sex, race/ethnicity and geographic area at state and county levels. These estimates will be evaluated for reliability and validity. The estimates will further be shared with local and state public health officials for use in addressing diabetes burden in the region.
