PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
Dr. Traci Kennedy, PI of the proposed K23, is a clinical scientist whose long-term goal is to lead a program of
research on developing and testing interventions to reduce problematic alcohol use among vulnerable young
people, especially young adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this
administrative supplement is to support Dr. Kennedy’s transition from a mentored career development K23 award
to research independence in the aftermath of her recent critical life event. This supplement support will facilitate
the successful and timely completion of the goals of the parent K23 project, and will therefore help ensure the
continuity of Dr. Kennedy’s research during this critical juncture in her career by providing funds to support
additional staff effort and resources. Together with personnel and resources provided by the parent award, the
supplemental effort of a research specialist, study clinician, computer programmer, and administrative support
specialist, as well as additional advertising to hasten participant recruitment, and trainings and supplies in part
to rapidly increase the research specialist’s skills, will expedite data collection during the supplement period and
allow Dr. Kennedy to devote more of her effort to activities that directly accomplish the study’s primary research
aims (e.g., data analysis, intervention development) and training aims (e.g., manuscript preparation, directed
readings, conference presentations) while research staff undertake greater effort toward day-to-day study
coordination and administrative tasks. As a result, the pace of the parent K23 project, which has slowed by
approximately 3 months due to delays related to Dr. Kennedy’s recent critical life event, will realign with the
originally proposed timeline by the end of the one-year administrative supplement period. In the subsequent
year, this resumption of the original project timeline will result in the timely transition to the final phase of the
parent K23 project, Dr. Kennedy’s successful submission of an R01 application based on K23 data, and Dr.
Kennedy’s ultimate transition to an independent research career.
