Summary - Abstract
The purpose of our NIDDK-sponsored T32 training grant is to support post-doctoral training in
diabetes research at UIC. The purpose of this T32 Diversity Supplement is to provide support
for the training of Julienne Sanchez Perez, MD in diabetes research at UIC. A native of Puerto
Rico and a woman, Dr Sanchez Perez has a strong track record of accomplishment and
demonstrated interest in research related to nutrition and diabetes, and she is committed to
working to prevent and reduce the burden of diabetes in underserved communities through
her research as a Physician Investigator. This training program will set her on a career path to
meet these goals. She will gain in depth research experience and training under the guidance of
a strong team of accomplished nationally recognized mentors who are highly experienced in
clinical research related to diabetes and nutrition. She also will participate in weekly seminars,
laboratory meetings and journal clubs and in local, regional and national research meetings.
She will complete required training in the Responsible Conduct of Research and in research
with human subjects and she will take graduate courses (e.g. Human Nutrition, Research Design
and Methods, Biostatistics) required for a Masters degree in Nutrition. Dr Sanchez Perez has
great promise for making important contributions to the biomedical community as a Physician
Investigator committed to reducing the burden of diabetes in underrepresented communities
and this training program will provide a critical platform for launching her career.
