COMPUTER BASED COURSE IN HEARING SCIENCE

DESCRIPTION: Work is proposed to develop a computer-based, interactive course in hearing science. This course is intended to provide a structured and pedagogically-effective introduction to hearing through lessons in which concepts and phenomena are demonstrated and explored interactively with carefully designed displays and interfaces. For topics in the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, the emphasis will be on conveying a visualization of the peripheral transduction of sound through animated schematic displays. For topics in psychoacoustics, the emphasis will be on interactive demonstrations in which the primary stimulus parameters are manipulatable, while temporal, spectral, and cochlear representations of the stimulus are displayed and audio signals are available for listening. The content of the course will be at an introductory level, appropriate for students in audiology and otology. In Phase I, an example lesson on profile analysis will be developed and a detailed outline for the course will be constructed. Phase II work will consist largely of developing the required lessons into a complete course. The eventual software product will be available on CD at a cost on the order of $100 and will be compatible with inexpensive consumer sound boards. This work builds on previous work in the development of a computer-based course in acoustic phonetics.
