This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Dr. Donnell Bowen, Professor of Pharmacology received funding in the current project period as a pilot project investigator. His project was entitled Application of Cellular Kinetics and Molecular Dynamics in Distinguishing Selectivity among a Non-Toxic 5-Fluorouracil Dose, Reduced Folates, Methotrexate, and Alimta in Breast Cancer and Normal Cells. This project was funded for 4 years. On October 17, 2005, Dr. Bowen died as a result of a serious illness. With guidance from both the External and Internal Advisory committees, approval was granted to utilize the final year of support remaining on Dr. Bowens project to provide competitive seed-money support for 4 different projects. These projects and the funds they received are listed below. The progress made on each project is presented in the subprojects section. 1. Dr. Indira Poola, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Retrospective Validation of Molecular markers for predicting development of Invasive Breast Cancer, $24,720. 2. Dr. Georges Haddad, Role of Nuclear Factor Kappa-B in the progression of Cardiac Hypertrophy into heart failure, Physiology and Biophysics, $24,720. 3. Dr. Sergei Nekhai, Protein Phosphatase-1 as a New Target for Anti-HIV-1 Retroviral Therapeutics, Center for Sickle Cell Disease, $24,720. 4. Dr. Robert L.Copland, Synthesis and evaluation of imido-substituted-naphthoquinone derivatives as inhibitor of kinases of the Ras-MAPK signaling cascade, Pharmacology, $24,720.
