英文摘要
PROJECT SUMMARY
This is an application for a Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (PA-21-071)
to support the training of Dr. Katherine Denney in the first two years of their postdoctoral training. Katherine is
eligible for support through this mechanism because they are disabled. Katherine is a promising scientist who
has diligently pursued research training as an undergraduate at Columbia University and as a doctoral candidate
at Stony Brook University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. They have a strong academic record in spite of
the challenges their disability poses, and a rich set of scientific experiences that complement their future
postdoctoral training. In their training at Rutgers, Katherine will join the highly productive laboratories of Dr.
Benjamin Samuels and Dr. Troy Roepke, who will train them in behavioral neuroscience, electrophysiology, and
neural circuit approaches and guide them towards research independence in the field of behavioral
neuroendocrinology. Katherine will also receive pedagogical training through the Rutgers INSPIRE (an IRACDA
program) fellowship, and attend national conferences to disseminate their research findings. In addition to their
co-mentors, Katherine’s training will be supported by a mentorship team of one additional Rutgers University
faculty member with expertise in viral methods. This training will provide strong preparation for a career as an
independent researcher and permit Katherine to compete successfully for their own K99/R00 and R25 support
as they transition to a faculty position at a primarily undergraduate institution.
