This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Our studies are designed to test the hypotheses that T1-weighted MR intensities (a marker of Mn brain deposition) in the basal ganglia of neonates receiving PN will correlate directly with (1) total (parenteral and enteral) dietary Mn intake, (2) total days on PN, (3) blood Mn levels (measured by High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS)) and (4) degree of hepatic dysfunction and cholestasis (assessed by conjugated bilirubin levels). We further hypothesize that T1-weighted MR intensities will correlate inversely with (1) gestational age and (2) iron (Fe) status (assessed by serum Fe, transferrin, ferritin, total iron binding capacity and hemoglobin).
