This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The aim of this study is to recruit a control group of healthy children - for an existing study of children with venous thrombosis.
This study will assess the validity of three measures of Post Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) in children with venous thrombosis: 1) Limb circumference difference - as an index of swelling, measured at the same anatomic level separately for upper and lower arms, thighs, and calves; 2) a PTS physical assessment scale (CEAP); and 3) a Pain Scale (Wong-Baker FACES). Discriminant validity will be assessed by comparing results on these measures for children with venous thrombosis versus age+gender matched healthy children who have never suffered a thrombosis. We hope to validate these measures, so that they might later be used as PTS outcome measures in a comparative drug therapy trial. The intention of this study is not to establish narrow confidence-interval population norms on these measures.
