This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The study is being conducted to investigate the duration of therapeutic action of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (DBS-STN) in patients with Parkinson's Disease. We have observed that patients show improvement in motor function even off-medication, off-stimulation compared to function pre-operatively. We would like to further investigate whether this occurred because DBS-STN slowed the progression of disease. However, it also may be due to an extremely long duration of therapeutic action of DBS-STN. In order to understand the duration of therapeutic action of DBS-STN, we wish to evaluate patients off stimulation and medication over a period of 4 days in a safe environment.
