英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The WINS active interaction phase ended concurrently with the end of funding to the WINS Clinical Centers in May, 2004. Based on the last scheduled data analysis incorporating clinical outcomes available through October 31, 2003, preliminary results from WINS evaluating dietary fat influence on breast cancer recurrence were presented at a plenary session of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in June of 2005.
It was recognized at the time of the ASCO WINS report that the conclusions were preliminary and further follow-up was required. Additional funding support has been obtained from the National Cancer Institute to allow for a WINS Extension to complete the original study design follow-up duration. The primary objective of the WINS Extension is to provide additional evidence regarding the potential influence of the WINS low fat eating plan on breast cancer recurrence.
The preliminary WINS results suggested that the dietary modification program targeting fat reduction may reduce breast cancer recurrences. The main purpose of the WINS extension study is to provide more definitive evidence regarding this issue. We hope to learn if the trends initially seen continue after contact with study nutritionists has ended and what diet women choose. Also, if changes are different for women who were in the intervention group (asked to change their diet previously) or the comparison group.
