This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This is a longitudinal, observational cohort study. The primary objective of this study is to develop new biomarkers for vasculitis for purposes of diagnosis, disease activity measurement, disease damage assessment, determination of disease state and evaluation of treatment response. There will be 300 subjects enrolled over 4 centers.
Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) and Microscopic polyangitis (MPA) are forms of vasculitis, affecting the medium and small vessels. WG/MPA affects both men and women with equal frequency and can also occur in children. The experimental biomarker testing systems identified and developed in this study will assist in determining diagnostic disease differentiation, measures of disease activity and response to treatment, and prediction of clinical outcomes for patients with WG/MPA. The study will be conducted at four major vasculitis centers in the US, utilizing the GCRC at each site. A comprehensive set of clinical and laboratory data will be collected on all patients during a five year follow-up period.
