This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the

Sickle cell disease results from an Adenine(A) to Thymine (T) substitution in codon 6 of the beta globin gene which specifies the insertion of valine in place of glutamic acid. This disease occurs in 1:900 at risk individuals (African Americans, Hispanics). It results in polymerization of the hemoglobin molecule upon deoxygenation, which leads to end-organ damage manifest as avascular necrosis of bone, stroke and diffuse osteopenia. Vitamin D deficiency is relatively common in African Americans with an estimated prevalence of 21% in the elderly. The explanations for vitamin D insufficiency are likely multifactor - poor nutritional intake, lack of sun exposure and increased skin pigmentation.
