英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this study is to compare the drug alendronate (FOSAMAX Merk &Co., Inc.) with a placebo and the standard of care (calcium and vitamin D) in treating children 8-21 years of age with thin bones caused by taking steroids. Alendronate does improve the strenth and health of bones in adults with osteoporosis. As a result, some pediatricians are currently using alendronate to treat young people with weak bones. However, there are no studies proving whether or not alendronate works in children and adolencents and what the side effects are in younger people.
