RELATIONS BETWEEN URINE AND SERUM MEASURES OF IRON STATUS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. These investigators have demonstrated that iron metabolism differs in subjects with Restless Leg syndrome (RLS). In a parallel study, these investigators are characterizing the mechanism of the relative iron deficiency observed in RLS and preliminary data implicate increased iron excretion as the etiology for reduced iron stores and the inability to maintain these stores. Preliminary data showed an unexpectedly strong relationship between 24 hour urinary iron excretion and night time transferring receptor (TfR) numbers. To confirm and better characterize the presumed inverse logarithmic relationship between iron excretion and serum TfR in normal controls, these investigators propose a descriptive study to analyze the 24 hour urine iron and serum TfR levels in 28 age, gender, and race-matched controls. These data will be used to establish the parameters of normal iron excretion and will be compared with the iron excretion observed in RLS subjects.
