This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This research is being sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is recognized that the plant or botanical supplement known as Milk Thistle is used by the general public as an alternative treatment for various diseases affecting the liver and prostate. Milk Thistle, like most plants, vegetables and fruits contains natural chemicals called flavonoids that in many cases provide protection to living cells and tissues by being antioxidants. Additionally, it is believed by scientists at the NIH that Milk Thistle may be a worthwhile treatment for some conditions and formal studies are being planned. The goal of this study is to determine if taking a Milk Thistle will affect the breakdown and excretion (metabolism) of other prescription medications when Milk Thistle is taken together with these medications.
