The progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) results in deterioration of articular cartilage and may ultimately necessitate surgical intervention to alleviate joint pain and enable normal performance of activities of daily living. Adaptations to muscle coordination patterns occur presumably in response to pain and gait deviations become more pronounced as the diseases progresses. The proposed study is designed to investigate the evolution of muscle coordination patterns during the progression of OA, to relate changes in coordination patterns to changes in gait, and to determine whether these changes effectively reduce loads at the knee.
