This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This project utilized behavioral testing an neuroimaging to characterize cognitive impairment in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), with a specific focus on the neural basis for semantic and grammatical aspects of language as it applies to progressive aphasia that is commonly seen in FTD. One component of this effort is to study regional brain activation during overt speech. Use of BOLD fMRI during overt speech is problematic, because overt speech causes large fluctuations in static susceptibility gradients from air filled cavities in the skull. In contrast, ASL based fMRI can be carried out using pulse sequences that are insensitive to static susceptibility effects.
