This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This research project involves the development of a sutureless tissue repair method using naphthalimide-modified chitosan films. These films are formed using a proprietary crosslinking photochemical technology. Their use, along with a related adhesive formulation using similar technology, could provide a novel biocompatible, biodegradable tape that may be used to replace suture in a number of tissue repair procedures. Using a predetermined tissue model, the student would evaluate how chemical and synthetic modifications to the films alter physical properties such as solubility, tensile strength, and longevity. This information could then be used to design films with specific lifetimes suited to the needs of various clinical applications. Longer lasting films could be designed for use on substantial tissue defects or reconstructive surgery and short-lived films could be used to aid in the repair of minor wounds.
