Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the leading cause of death among nosocomial infections in the intensive care unit. The incidence of VAP ranges from 9% to 65% depending on the clinical subgroups studied and the diagnostic criteria used. The crude mortality rates from VAP have been found to be as high as 70%, with attributable mortality ranging from 30-50%. Little is know about the genetic variability of risk for ventilator-associated pneumonia. In this study we propose to assess if genetic polymorphisms in PON2 are associated with the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia. We tested the hypothesis that subjects who develop VAP will have a higher frequency of the CC genotype at the site compared with those who get intubated and do not develop this complication.
