This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Morbid obesity is a common condition that is steadily increasing in incidence and weight-reduction surgery is growing in popularity. Without adequate treatment, morbid obesity predisposes to serious cardiopulmonary complications and death. Failure of weight-reduction surgery is predominantly due to non-compliance with a diet and exercise program. Pre-operative assessment of diet and exercise compliance is presently done by evaluating patients' self-reported accounts. Self-reports of both food intake and exercise are known to have low reliability. Due to a lack of methods, physical activity in bariatric surgery patients has not been measured. Using a unique device, Intelligent Device for Energy Expenditure and Activity (IDEEA), we will for the first time quantify energy expenditure before bariatric surgery. By measuring energy expenditure and changes in body weight we can calculate energy intake.
