This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a progressive disease with no cure and minimally effect treatment. Clinical experience indicates that patients lose weight from loss of muscle mass, but also from reduced caloric intake. Hypothesis: Adequate nutrition may have a positive impact on survival. A group of measures are available as quantitative indices of global ALS progression, but similar measures have not been developed to evaluate nutritional status. Objective: Develop and validate methods from prospective data to determine energy balance that will be applicable in a future multicenter Phase III study of nutrition and non-invasive ventilation.
