This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. ALS is a progressive disease with no cure and minimally effect treatment. Clinical experience indicates that patients lose weight from loss of muscle mass, but also from reduced caloric intake. Hypothesis: Adequate nutrition may have a positive impact on survival. A group of measures are available as quantitative indices of global ALS progression, but similar measures have not been developed to evaluate nutritional status. Objective: Develop and validate methods from prospective data to determine energy balance that will be applicable in a future multicenter Phase III study of nutrition and non-invasive ventilation.
