This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Diabetic neuropathy (DPN) affects 50% of patients with diabetes, resulting in degeneration of the longest nerves, resulting in sensory loss, pain and weakness. Pain and risk for foot amputation are the most common associated disabilities. Pain in DPN results from abnormal firing of small nerve fibers with accumulation of sodium and calcium channels. Pulsed magnetic fields induce extremely low-frequency (ELF) currents, which cause nerves to become refractory to further firing. We hypothesize that directing a magnetic field into the soles of the feet may reduce abnormal nerve firing responsible for DPN pain.
Objectives: To determine if two hours of daily Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) in subjects with painful DPN over a three-month period of time can:
1. Reduce neuropathic pain scores
2. Improve quality of life
3. Result in nerve regeneration.
