PRODUCTION OF SOMATIC CELL NUCLEAR TRANSFER EMBRYOS AND EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. To use the rhesus monkey model to produce embryonic stem cell lines from adult fibroblast cells and oocytes that have been treated with somatic cell nuclear transfer. Adult fibroblast cells are used as donors for nuclei that are transferred to oocytes after the original oocyte nuclear material has been removed. SCNT oocytes can then be activated and embryos cultured so that the inner cell mass can be used to generate an embryonic stem cell line. Being able to produce embryonic stem cells from cells has tremendous applications in regenerative medicine, however, the procedures for this must be investigated in a nonhuman primate before being applied to human medicine.
