This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to find out whether tumor cells are present in the peripheral blood of patients with hormone-resistant, advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Subjects are being asked to participate in this study because they have been diagnosed with hormone-resistant, advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Blood samples will be analyzed according to the protocol developed in the Surgical Oncology Laboratory of the Hollings Cancer center by Dr. Mike Mitas (basic science investigator). Expression of the following genes: EpCAM1, EpCAM2, XAG, S100P, DAG1, Claudin7, Ese1, Mal2, Spint2, ERG, and ETV1, will be measured by a very sensitive procedure known as "real-time RT-PCR". About 10 ml of the blood sample will be sent to Washington University in St. Louis to be tested in parallel. Both blood samples will have no identifiers and will be only labeled with a random two-digit number. As negative controls, peripheral blood samples from healthy volunteers will be used. These samples have already been acquired by Dr. Mitas (the basic science investigator) under a separate approved protocol.
