This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Specific aims of this study include the primary one of examing the association of leukocyte telomere restriction fragment length with oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in a community sample of overweight or obese Non-Hispanic White, Non-Hispanic Black, and Latino adults. Secondarily, to examine the association of leukocyte telomere restriction fragment length with coronary artery calcification as well as novel and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in a community sample of overweight or obese Non-Hispanic White, Non-Hispanic Black, and Latino adults. The final specific aime will be to examine the association of leukocyte telomere restriction fragment length with a conventional multivariable coronary heart disease risk score (Framingham Risk Score) in a community sample of Non-Hispanic White, Non-Hispanic Black, and Latino adults. Telomere restriction fragment length could be a useful marker for risk of CHD and insulin resistance, a precursor to both diabetes and CHD. Health disparities between Non-Hispanic Whites and minorities have been well documented and have included insulin resistance and coronary heart disease. Consequently, telomere length may have additional utility as an explanatory variable for disease risk across racial and ethnic groups. The knowledge gained from this study will help to prevent CHD.
