EXENATIDE AS ADJUVANT THERAPY IN ISLET CELL TRANSPLANTATION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. This pilot, open label trial aims at evaluating the efficacy of Exenatide as adjunctive therapy in type 1 diabetic patients, recipients of islet allografts that have fasting C-peptide levels of > 0.5 ng/ml but have been unable to maintain normal glucose control without exogenous insulin administration. Specifically, we plan to test the hypothesis that the use of Exenatide (10 mg sc tid) for a 6 month period in patients that have received al least 10,000 IE/kg with 1 or 2 transplants and are at least 6 months after the last transplant would result in improved glycemic control and permit the discontinuation of exogenous insulin therapy while maintaining HbA1c level < 7.0%.
