This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This is a phase II study that aims to investigate prospectively a new therapy for stroke patients with severe motor deficits. The justification of this study is that the motor deficits are an important factor for their quality of lives and rTMS has been shown to be associated with motor improvement in patients with stroke. This therapeutic trial will be a 10-day, randomized, parallel-group design, double-blind, incomplete cross-over, placebo controlled clinical trial. The primary aim of this investigation is to determine whether the use of rTMS in patients with stroke and severe motor deficits improves motor function. Patients will be selected based on the results of diffusion tensor imaging. Therefore, the second aim of this study is to investigate whether diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) could be a novel marker for good response to rTMS therapy in stroke patients.
