CLINICAL TRIAL: INTRA-ORAL LIGHT ON GINGIVITIS (BLUE LIGHT STUDY)

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of exposing bacteria in dental plaque to a light source that can be placed in the mouth. Light is used to treat other conditions caused by bacteria, such as acne. Researchers at Forsyth have noticed that people who get their teeth whitened with a system that uses light seem to have less gingivitis (gum inflammation) afterward. They have also found that when they shine a similar type of light on bacteria in the laboratory, the numbers of some of the bacteria are reduced. The bacteria that are affected are the ones that are responsible for gum disease. This study will see if a specially designed light reduces the bacteria in plaque and gum inflammation. Thirty (30) generally healthy people with pre-existing gum inflammation on both sides of the mouth will participate in the study. To qualify for the study participants must have a certain amount of gum inflammation on both sides of their mouth.
