CLINICAL TRIAL: METFORMIN MITIGATION OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC-INDUCED METABOLIC DYSREGUL

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will evaluate metformin, an oral antihyperglycemic agent, for the prevention of metabolic and physiological changes associated with the use of antipsychotics. We will recruit 40 children and adolescents with a serious pervasive mental illness (SPMI) that have a history of minimal exposure to 2nd generation antipsychotic (SGA) medication. Participants will receive 12 weeks of treatment with either both metformin and the newly initiated SGA, or only the newly initiated SGA. All subjects will receive healthy lifestyle guidance at each visit.
