This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Purposes: 1. To validate the use of a self report tool to screen for periodontal disease among pregnant women 2. To compare inflammatory responses to oral pathogens between women with and without periodontal disease. Participants: Pregnant women receiving care at the University of North Carolina Women s Clinic Procedures (methods): Eligible women will be recruited during prenatal care visits. Women who agree to participate will complete a questionnaire designed to screen for presence of periodontal disease. Within 14 days of completion of the questionnaire, enrolled women will undergo a standardized periodontal health exam to determine presence and extent of clinical periodontal disease. At the time of the periodontal health exam, gingival crevicular fluid and plaque specimens will be collected and stored for future analyses. Women will also be asked to provide a sample of venous blood to examine for inflammatory responses to oral pathogens.
