This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. In a previous study, we showed that estrogens reduce circulating insulin concentrations. As a follow-up to that study, we will investigate potential mechanisms by which estrogen may regulate insulin metabolism. Specifically, this study will test whether estrogen alters the production and clearance of insulin in postmenopausal women. Based on previous research, we hypothesize that estrogen will increase both insulin secretion and clearance. We further hypothesize that the increase in clearance will exceed the increase in secretion, resulting in an overall decrease in plasma insulin concentrations. Studying the effect of estrogen on insulin metabolism is an important step in understanding the progression and prevention of diabetes in women
