This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This study will determine the relationship between anatomical and biochemical measures of adiposity on one hand, and markers of airway inflammation and oxidant stress on the other hand, in asthmatics and in healthy subjects. Anatomical measures of adiposity include measures of total body fat, subcutaneous and visceral fat. Biochemical measures of adiposity include the ratio of the levels of serum leptin (a pro-inflammatory adipokine) and adiponectin (an anti-uinflammatory adipokine). Measures of airway inflammation include levels of TNF-a in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and eosinophil cationic protein level in induced sputum (IS). Measures of airway oxidant stress includ 8-isoprostane levels in EBC and in plasma.
The association between adiposity and airway inflammation/oxidant stress is different between asthmatics and healthy subjects.
Determine if there is an interaction between asthma status and adiposity on airway inflammation/oxidant stress.
