项目摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Neonatal candidiasis is a lethal disease that is poorly understood. Despite an attributable mortality of 30%, the current gold standard for the diagnosis of neonatal candidiasis (repeated culture of normally sterile body fluid) has a sensitivity of 50%; and there have been no prospective studies to establish guidelines for the initiation of empirical treatment. This protocol will establish a prospective cohort of 1,750 infants born < 1000 grams birthweight in order to evaluate three new diagnostic tests and develop a risk stratification model for invasive candidiasis.
