This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a spectrum of liver conditions associated with fat accumulation that ranges from benign, non progressive liver fat accumulation to severe liver injury, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Currently, there is no established effective therapy for NASH, and its natural history and prognosis are not well understood. Indiana University is one of the Clinical Centers for the NIDDK funded Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network (NASH CRN). The "Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) Database" is one of the initiatives proposed by the NASH CRN. The objective of this database is to develop a multicenter registry of patients with NAFLD and to conduct pertinent clinical research. It is anticipated that up to 1500 patients with NAFLD will be enrolled nationwide and both children and adults will be recruited. At this site, we plan to enroll 200 patients with NAFLD (150 adults and 50 children). The NAFLD Database will collect information that will enable the investigators to address certain hypotheses pertinent to the etiology, pathogenesis, and natural history of NAFLD.
