RANDOMIZED TRIAL OF RECOMBINANT GM-CSF FOR PATIENTS W/ ACUTE LUNG INJURY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Patients diagnosed with a life-threatening illness that has injured your lungs, called acute lung injury or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) who have been put on a mechanical ventilator, to help breathe, will be considered for enrollment in the study. The purpose of this study is to find out whether a drug called Sargramostim can help patients with acute lung injury or ARDS. Sargramostim is also known as GM-CSF. Sargramostim has been approved by the FDA to treat complications arising from some types of cancer or cancer treatment, and some studies using animals suggest that it may also help ARDS patients. Sargramostim is a biological compound that is already in the body, especially in the lungs. It is important for keeping lungs healthy. Sargramostim may help injured cells inside the lung heal faster, and it may help lungs fight against bacteria that can cause infections. It may also prevent or decrease scarring in the lungs. This study may help us develop better treatment for patients with ARDS in the future.'
