This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to determine if supplemental choline consumption has an effect on a pregnant woman by: 1) increasing the level of choline in the woman's blood, 2)increasing the level of choline in the woman's breast milk, 3) enhancing memory performance in her baby. Studies have shown that choline is a necessary part of the human diet. Choline is important in makin membranes for all the cells in the body, and for making chemicals that are responsible for nerve function. Studies have also shown that choline improves memory of rats when they are given choline at early stages in their lives. This study will show whether choline supplementation in pregnant women will improve memory function of their babies after they are born.
