ALTERATIONS AND RENOVATIONS SUMMARY Building on prior successes, partner institution Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) requests funds for renovations that will support the goals and objectives of the proposed INBRE V renewal. Prior INBRE grants have supported and inspired the development of the biomedical sciences at HPU. The impacts on the HPU Department of Natural Sciences have been transformational and sustained, and are now culminating in a major expansion of research and instructional lab space that is currently under construction on HPU’s downtown Honolulu campus. With this success, HPU is now looking to expand the scope of its biomedical research by expanding the lab resources for its new Biomedical Engineering program. HPU’s Engineering program, which just graduated it first cohort in Spring 2022, has strong growth potential with plans to hire 2 additional Biomedical Engineering faculty in the coming years. The program currently has access to 3 research labs totaling 700 sq ft at HPU’s Waterfront Plaza facility. Here, HPU proposes to create a new 300 sq ft Biosafety level 2 research lab in space contiguous with the current engineering labs, a 40% increase in lab space. The lab will feature all cleanable finishes, fixed cabinetry, a dedicated hand wash sink, an eye-wash, proper lighting and electrical capacity, and all necessary mechanical and HVAC modifications. Existing equipment to equip the lab includes a top-load autoclave, a 4 ft biological safety cabinet, and a -80 °C freezer. The facility will be managed jointly by the INBRE-funded Shared Instrumentation Facility and the engineering faculty users. This lab will provide an essential expansion of laboratory space for the Biomedical Engineering program and provide additional space for HPU’s Student Research Experiences (SRE) activities. In light of HPU’s hiring plans, this new lab will enhance HPU’s ability to attract high quality biomedical engineering faculty and increase the opportunities for undergraduate biomedical research. The renovation will add capacity that will also help cultivate new SRE mentors as well as potentially attract a future INBRE Junior Investigator. The expansion of research resources at HPU in bioengineering will also foster collaborations within HPU and with other INBRE partner institutions. The aim of this proposal is: Specific Aim: Create a 300 sq ft Biosafety Level 2 laboratory to support undergraduate research in the HPU Biomedical Engineering program.
