HETEROANNULATION OF HYDROQUINONES WITH ALKYNES/AMINES

During the course of an investigation of the synthesis of quinone derivatives of cyclynes and cyclodiynes, we have discovered several novel processes expected to have utility in the synthesis of natural products, polymers and new ligands for transition and main group elements. These reactions include: (a) intramolecular cyclization of alkynylhydroquinones to polycyclic systems, (b)the production of indoloquinones from the combination of 2,3-diiodo- 4,5-dimethylhydroquinone with amines, (c) the activation of the methyl groups of 2,3-diiodo-4,5-dimethylhydroquinone to give novel bidentate bisamine ligands, and (d) the formation of isoindoloquinones from the interaction of a diethynylhydroquinone with amines. The exploration and development of these novel reactions is the goal of this research project.
