The technical objective of this cooperative research effort is to build on recent advances in applied engineering mechanics and intelligent transportation systems to better model the performance of asphaltic pavements under Canadian field state conditions. This research program will be led by the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. The supporting organizations of this research include: International Road Dynamics, City of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation and the National Research Council Center for Construction Materials Research. Benefits of this research program will include: 1. Improved characterization of Canadian asphaltic pavement materials; 2. Undertake cooperative research in mechanistic testing of asphalt pavement materials; 3. Improve training programs and research facilities at the University of Saskatchewan in the area of asphalt pavement engineering for students and industry practitioners; 4. Facilitate technology transfer of new advancements in asphalt binder research, asphalt concrete mix characterization, mechanistic road structural modeling, and applied intelligent transportation systems for improved asphaltic pavement management. In summary, this research attempts to bridge the gap between advanced engineering mechanics theory with pragmatic field applications of asphaltic pavement engineering and pavement management for the Canadian pavements industry.
