A two-axis mechanical testing frame designed for tension/compression and torsion loading will be modified with the state of the art controls and software to enable precise control and measurement of stress, strain, and strain rates in single or combined axis loading of engineering materials. The ability to combine loading will enable new study of the evolving microstructure characterized by anisotropic mechanical behaviour observed in complicated shape change operations used in manufacturing. Coupling of the mechanical response to the stress and / or strain state will be used to develop constitutive relationships necessary for modelling deformation processing and, or material behavior in service of products such as frame tubes used in automobiles, pressure tubes used in the nuclear industry, and artificial or natural materials used for human bone replacement.
