项目摘要
The purpose of this application is to request funds to upgrade an existing Materials Testing System (MTS) with a high temperature furnace. The upgrade will allow studying mechanical properties of engineering materials in the temperature range up to 1200 C in different environments. The upgrade is an important part of the instrumentation needed in the development of research program in the area of plastic deformation of Mg-based and Al-based alloys and fundamental aspects of fatigue of materials as described in Part II of this proposal. These materials are important to Canada and represent steadily growing sector of the Canadian economy. The research carried out with the help of the requested furnace will provide a new dimension to our research efforts, it will strengthen existing collaborative work with the industry and will allow to develop new collaborations with other group at different universities in Canada and abroad.
