Computation of controllers for complex systems

We are interested in the complex systems  that arise in control of smart structures, micro-positioning and cell manipulation.  Accurate and reliable control of these systems is essential to obtain the required performance.  Our research is  concerned with the computation of controllers for these systems. A related area of interest is simulation of these systems, as well as of cellular networks. Control systems theory is  being used to understand the behaviour of cellular networks. The computer models for these systems are generally very large. Since the models for these systems are of high order and in general nonlinear, they cannot be approached using  tools appropriate for low-order linear systems. The algorithms necessary for controller design add an extra layer of complexity to the calculations.  A powerful computer with extensive memory is required to develop computational techniques for control of these systems. This proposal is for a computer that will be used to develop tools for control of these systems. A key use of this equipment will be to expose graduate students and undergraduate research assistants to the control of complex systems. There is a need in industry for graduates who are not only familiar with theory, and possess computer skills, but understand how to relate theory and computational results. The computer is intended to be used in the research  of several current students. Furthermore, the proposed research consists of a number of projects that will be used in the training of future students.
