The Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research (BIMR) is one of the oldest and largest materials institutes in North America.  Physically located at McMaster University, it has a diverse membership that includes researchers from many different disciplines and research institutions.  The Institute and its membership have been very successful in revitalizing the facilities and equipment available for shared usage.  Traditional strengths in sample preparation and material synthesis, crystal growth, photonic applications and electron microscopy have received major reinvestments, while new facilities for research involving polymers, biomaterials, computation, optical characterization and nanoscience have been created.  The proposed Major Facilities Access grant would ensue that a highly skilled technical and professional staff is available to provide access to these state-of-the-art facilities.  The staff play an essential role in maintaining the facilities, training of students, providing access to non-expert researchers, promoting collaborative work and providing service to local industry.
